Ton Yr Ywen Avenue, Cardiff

James had always wanted his home to feel brighter, more welcoming, and better suited to modern family living. While the existing kitchen extension provided additional space, it felt cramped, disconnected from the rest of the house, and lacked the sense of openness he was looking for.

Rather than simply enlarging the footprint, we began by exploring how the home could work better as a whole. Through our integrated design-and-build approach, we considered the relationship between light, space, and flow from the earliest stages of the project, ensuring every design decision supported the way the family wanted to live.

The proposed open-plan extension centres around a generous oversized pyramid rooflight, drawing natural light deep into the heart of the home and transforming the atmosphere of the space throughout the day. A veranda detail edged with antique oak Millboard cladding introduces warmth and character, creating a seamless connection between the architecture and the garden beyond.

By coordinating the design, planning, technical detailing, and construction strategy as one process, we were able to develop a scheme that balances architectural impact with practical family living.

For James, the transformation is about more than additional square footage. It's about creating a home that feels open, connected, and filled with light—a space where family life can unfold naturally and where the boundaries between inside and outside feel effortlessly blurred.
